Our client, a firm of consulting engineers is looking to hire Building Science Manager. Reporting directly to the President you will be responsible for the delivery of consulting projects, including condition surveys, investigations and the specification and management of building restoration projects.

The Manager, Building Sciences is responsible for overseeing the Building Sciences operations. The incumbent of this role will operate the department maintaining profitability and growth and will provide technical advice and direction for employees, clients, contractors, and manufacturers.

This includes: investigation, reporting, specification preparation, quality observation and liaising with clients, contractors and manufacturers.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Conduct and/or oversee field review/testing and data collection, design, report and specification preparation and contract administration; work may include but is not limited to the following:

  • Mentor employees in all aspects of Building Science Consulting
  • Provide training for each individual for specific duties related to each position at the office
  • Coordination of Project Team
  • Coordinate field data retrieval and prepare Reserve Fund Study and Capital Expenditure Plan Reports
  • Coordinate field data retrieval and prepare performance audit, technical/building audit or other investigative reports complete with observations, conclusions, recommendations and repair budgets
  • Coordinate field data retrieval required for the preparation of repair specifications, drawings and tendering
  • Coordinate onsite quality control and adherence to prepared specifications as required
  • Provide and coordinate project management and related contract administration as required
  • When required, the above listed duties may include liaising with the client, contractor, manufacturer, sub-consultant and others
  • Provide technical support, guidance and review of completed work prior to delivery to the client
  • Promote team building, quality, public relations, enthusiasm, ethics, initiative and reliability from the Engineering employees in the Building Sciences department
  • Provide input to the sales and marketing plan of the department; work with the Director of Engineering and the Manager of Sales & Marketing to identify and implement and effective plan
  • Identify and regularly consult with various clients/organizations of up-coming projects where a relationship has been established
  • Prepare, review and present department specific proposals; follow up on prepared proposals and identify reasons for success/failure
  • Assist with the development and implementation of policies, standards and procedures for the department when requested
  • Ensure work area is maintained in a clean and orderly manner and that personnel comply with the company safety policy

Various administrative duties which include:

  • Oversee all invoicing
  • Preparation of proposals/RFPs
  • Review inter-company billing and manage sub-contractors
  • Update production meeting and log weekly
  • Hire and retain staff – dismiss as required, in conjunction with the HR Manager
  • Employee review and advancement
  • Review job costing reports on a weekly basis and financial reports on a monthly basis and prepare corrective measures as required
  • Ensure deliverables are provided to the client on time

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Building Science Engineering with P.Eng designation
  • Minimum 8 – 10 years’ management experience in a consulting engineering environment managing building science or structural restoration projects
  • BSSO designation is an asset
  • Ability to provide leadership to junior engineers/technicians
