The Metallurgist is responsible for supporting metallurgical activities throughout the our client’s organization. The position will be based out of the Lackawanna, NY facility but will require travel to other facilities and suppliers in the southern Ontario region.  The Metallurgist will undertake activities associated with the continuous improvement of personnel, processes, and equipment.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining
    • the metallurgical aspects of the mainframe computer system, including the generation of MTRs
    • the Approved Supplier Lists for Steel Related Items and Non-steel Purchases
    • Documentation supporting recyclable materials initiatives and reported substances (i.e. LEED, RoHS, etc.)
  • Interacting with the steel suppliers
  • Collecting
    •  data and preparing summaries for:
      • Supplier performance reports
      • Status reports of material held for quality reasons
  • Conducting
    • assessments and audits of Steel Suppliers and Outside Processors
    • Internal Audits of the QMS and product specification compliance
    • Technical investigations relating to the improvement of process yields.
    • review and assessment of Sales Inquiries with respect to current capabilities
  • Assisting with
    • revisions to the QMS
    • management of non-conforming product and applying proven problem-solving methodology to develop solutions to prevent recurrence
    • selection and implementation of new equipment and facility expansions
  • Leading
    • initiatives to develop new steel types/grades and to enhance existing steel types/grades
    • the Management of Change and Risk Assessment processes for the Energy Division
    • generation of Technical Data Sheets for Energy Products
    • and actively participating in continuous improvement and problem-solving initiatives
  • Coordinating
    • steel related trials and report on results
    • New Product Development activities
    • the risk register and risk assessment meetings for Energy Tubulars
  • Interacting with Quality Management on potential steel quality issues
  • Providing metallurgical support for the corporate Steel Purchasing function
  • Investigating customer complaints and claims of a metallurgical nature, interfacing with customers, as required
  • Advising operations on the mill and testing facilities for optimum quality
  • Adherence to and compliance with all applicable company policies and procedures

Job Specifications:

Educational and Experience Requirements for this position:

  • Engineering Degree in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a metals processing or manufacturing environment
  • Quality training is an asset
